A NEW support group has been launched for women with secondary breast cancer (secondary breast cancer is when breast cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body to form a new cancer).
The group, run by nurses from Basildon Hospital’s breast care unit and St Luke’s Hospice, provides information, support and the opportunity to meet with other women going through a similar experience.
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month, 2-4pm at the Outpatients and Therapies Department at St. Luke’s Hospice, Basildon. The next meeting is being held on Thursday 7 April 2016.
Hilary Gee, breast care nurse at Basildon Hospital, said: “Women diagnosed with secondary breast cancer may have already been through treatment to remove the primary breast cancer (lump in the breast), and so it can be extremely difficult for them to find out the cancer has spread to another part of the body.
“They may feel incredibly alone, so this group aims to help put them in touch with other women going through the same or a similar experience. It can really help to share stories, and hear about ways to cope, practically and emotionally, from someone other than a healthcare professional.”
Mel Costin, Clinical Lead, St. Luke’s Day Hospice added: “We are looking forward to hosting this new group which will be meeting at the Hospice. We will be offering support and giving information, (which is not widely known about or available on the NHS but is available as part of the support we offer), regarding our services including complementary therapies, counselling and other support aimed at helping women cope with their cancer diagnosis.”
