A CATERING student from South Essex College has won a silver medal in an international competition.
Daniel Rimmell, 20, who studies City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Professional Cookery at the College’s Thurrock Campus, picked up the accolade at the Junior Lamb Chef of the Year event at Olympia.
The scores of young people who took part in the international event had just 30 minutes to prepare, cook and serve a lamb dish which was then judged by professional chefs.
The junior chefs’ work was then graded and given relevant awards. Daniel’s dish – roasted rosemary crusted lamb with celeriac puree, potatoes and baby carrots – was awarded a silver medal.
Daniel, who lives in Grays, said he was delighted with the result.
He said: “It was an honour to take part in the challenge and to be awarded a silver medal was a nice surprise. It was quite daunting having the judges watching over me but it was a great experience.
“I’ve always loved cooking, even from a young age when I would help my mum and nan cook roast dinners so it’s great to be studying something I am passionate about.
“My tutors have been really supportive and the facilities at the College have really helped me get used to the equipment that is used in the real world.”
