ESSEX Police have launched an investigation after a man was shot in Stanford Le Hope this evening. Officers were contacted shortly before 7pm with reports that a man driving a silver Ford Transit van had been shot while he was sat in his vehicle at the junction of London Road and Stanford Road. He has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are believed to be life-changing but not life-threatening.
The suspect is reported to have been driving a silver Mercedes C-class saloon vehicle which drove off at speed in the direction of the Orsett Cock roundabout.
Investigating officer, Detective Inspector Al Pitcher said: "The scene of this incident has been cordoned off while we carry out a forensic examination of the location and house to house enquiries.
"At this time of night there would have been a lot of people, including motorists heading home, in this area and we would appeal for anyone who saw what happened to get in touch. We have been carrying out searches of the area and the police helicopter has also been assisting.
"My officers will remain at the scene throughout the night and the road will remain closed while we carry out our investigations.
" We believe the victim to be a man in his 50s who is from the Stanford Le Hope area.
"The motive for the attack has not been established but all of the information in our possession at this time does not suggest that there is any threat to the wider public.
"I would appeal for anyone who saw what happened or who has any other information that could assist to call me on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
