Man in hospital after "assault by group" outside Grays railway station

ESSEX Detectives investigating the serious assault of a man which happened near Grays train station yesterday evening are appealing for witnesses.

The assault happened shortly before 8.10pm. The victim, a man in his 40s, was with a group of four men. They had an altercation and the victim was hit in the face and then slashed with what is thought to have been a small knife. He suffered serious injuries to his face, head and shoulder.

He was taken to hospital and is now in a stable condition.

DS Phil Moulsher from Grays CID said: "We believe the incident happened on a piece of land which is a grassy area between the church and railway station. It leads from the alleyway which is just off Station Approach. We have limited details about the group of men but one is believed to have had a small, black dog with him. We also know that a group of young black men stepped in and tried to intervene and we would really like to speak to them.”
