LIBRARIES across the borough are hosting the Roald Dahl themed Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge from 16 July.
The challenge is aimed at children of all ages, encouraging them to read six books over six weeks to collect Roald Dahl cards, medals and certificates.
Pre-school children can also take part (with their parents help) to collect stickers and receive a hanging mobile and a certificate.
Older readers (year six and above) can join the ImagiNation My Zine challenge where 2 books are read and a zine is made. Grays Library and South Ockendon Centre are holding workshops to support readers in making their zines.
Cllr Deborah Stewart, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “It’s important that local young people are aware that the borough’s libraries offer learning opportunities and fun educational activities and events throughout the summer school holiday.
“These types of events and competitions create an excellent opportunity for children and teens to socialise and meet people outside of school.”
The popular ZooLab animal handling sessions are also back in libraries to accompany the Roald Dahl themed The Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge. Children and parents can meet the ranger and her friends and discover the amazing world of animals.
Professional storyteller, John Kirk, will be retelling the Roald Dahl classic The Twits on Monday 8 August as part of the themed events at libraries across Thurrock.
The Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge is free to enter. Tickets for the ZooLab animal handling sessions and John Kirk storytelling events are available from the venues for £3 each.
