Football: Rocks left regretting missing their chances

Vanarama National League South

East Thurrock United 1 v 1 Eastbourne Borough

THE ROCKS were left rueing their missed chances as they drew 1-1 at the FutureFuel Stadium.

The first chance of the game came in the ninth minute when James Walker tried to chip the Borough keeper as he lay on the ground but defender Mark Hughes headed off the line.

Borough were an impressive unit who spread the ball across the park whilst using Nathaniel Pinney as the fulcrum of the team.

Rocks wasted a good free kick in the 10th minute and you felt that they had to make he most of their chances.

A defensive mix up at the heart of the Rock’s defence nearly let Elliott Romain in.

But it was Rock’s who opened the scoring in the 15th minute when the ball fell to Tom Wraight and he was able to fire home from close range.

Joe Gardner nearly made it two with a side-footed shot that the keeper palmed away for a corner. From which, Michael Clark headed just over.

You still felt that East Thurrock were making life difficult for themselves with misplaced passes and they made heavy weather of clearing their lines.

But as the half progressed, East Thurrock settled into their game and played the expressive passing game that boss John Coventry loves. It exasperated Borough, who reverted to long balls.

Infant on move in the 39th minute could justifiably be described as champagne football with such intricate passing with Joe Gardner at the centre of it all.

But Borough could be dangerous and it took a wonderful fingertip save from Lucas to prevent them drawing level.

Rock should have made it 2-0 on half time but their fast ended with Harry Honesty blasting over.

As the second half began. Rocks fans hoped they would not rue those missed chances.

When Miguel Baptista’s shot rattled the post in the 51st minute,it made it even more important that they get that second goal.

Rocks continued to pour on the style especially Reece Harris but in the 65th minute, the inevitable happened when Elliott Roman squeezed the ball home.

Sam Higgins came on after an injury lay off but he only lasted ten minutes when he went off lame again.

Borough attacker Elliott Roman was red carded after whipping away Ryan Sammon’s legs.

East Thurrock went for it but lost a little of their shape and when Higgins went off the also lost their edge.

In the end, the draw seemed like a fair result.
