Football: Grays Ath fall to another heavy defeat

Essex Senior CupRedbridge 1 v 2 ThurrockReport courtesy of Thurrock FCTHURROCK took a strong squad to Oakside to compete in this Essex Senior Cup fixture, there were a few nervy moments but at the end of the evening a pair of goals by Jordan Clark saw Thurrock into the next roundThurrock sustained the pressure for the first fifteen minutes, Ronnie Winn wining the ball at the half way line and sending it along the wing to Ross Wall whose cross takes a slender touch from a defender to take it away from Harry Cook’s foot. Junior Baker stays up after a corner and has the close attention of three defenders at the side of the box but still manages to make space to attempt a cross that gets blocked. Cook chases down a through ball which Redbridge keeper Jake Mernagh just gets to first having to palm the ball into the air before catching. Thurrock move the ball right to left across the pitch from Reece Morgan to Remi Sutton via James Goode, Sutton plays a one-two with Ross Wall and gets a snapshot away but it is dragged wide of the goal. Ronnie Winn bursts through the midfield and lays the ball out to Wall on the left wing, Wall finds Ross Gleed who gets his header on target but Mernagh is well placed to take a comfortable catch. A long ball out from Connor Wheatley finds Wall who drives into the box but his shot is beyond the far post. The first nervy moment as Redbridge break down the right wing and Aron Gordon shoots across Wheatley only to see the ball come back off the far post followed a few minutes later by another break downfield but this time the final shot is well wide.Thurrock manage to craft a few more half chances before half time, with the ball bouncing around the edge of Redbridge’s area Cook manages to get a shot away but it is blocked to safety. Reece Morgan’s cross from the right wing is flicked on by Wall but beyond Winn following in behind. Sutton takes a throw to Wall who battles to make space to cross, Cook challenges cleanly with the keeper and gets the ball in the net but the officials have seen an infringement and the goal doesn’t stand. In the final minute Winn, Wall and Sutton link up again to get the ball in the area, Cook’s touch is a bit heavy this time and the chance is gone.Half Time: Redbridge 0 Thurrock 0Thurrock redouble their efforts in the second half. Goode breaks up Redbridge probing forwards and sends Morgan on his way, the final ball is too close to Mernagh. Ross Gleed works the ball along the right wing and sets Ross Wall who is dragged back. Two more scary moments in as many minutes for Thurrock as again Redbridge drive in from the right wing but Wheatley rushes from goal to smother the shot, the ball is then worked forwards only for the shot to be pulled wide of goal. The deadlock is broken after twenty minutes, some hard work in midfield to gain the ball before Wall tips the ball out to Gleed, Gleed is initially lining up a shot but pulls the ball back to Jordan Clark who shoots between three players to find the net. [0-1]The goal spurs Thurrock on and pressing high up the pitch a number of efforts are sprayed around the Redbridge goal but none cause trouble until just after the half hour mark. Ross Wall finds a defence splitting ball for Clark to run onto and pull away from the high back four, he steadies himself to side-step the keeper and unceremoniously has his feet taken away by the chasing Stephen Good who earns a yellow card. Clark places the ball on the penalty spot and confidently strokes it past Mernagh for his and Thurrock’s second goal. [0-2]Another twitch as a Redbridge corner to the front post is headed just over the bar before Redbridge get a goal back with two minutes of normal time remaining. A long ball down the left wing, Jay Knight and Reside Coxi-Sebastfo manage to get between Reece Morgan and Sam West to deliver the ball into the six yard box for a goalmouth scramble, Jordan Gent gets the telling touch. [1-2]A near equaliser as Gordon is on the end of a long ball out of defence but missed the target.Thurrock heed the warning and see out the game whilst almost extending the lead, Wall works his way across the edge of the area before Winn flashes an effort inches wide and in the final seconds of added time Winn and substitute Solomon Coker win the ball and feed Wall but Mernagh gets down bravely at Wall’s feet to deny the chance.Thurrock are now in the final 16 and wait to find out their next opponents.Team: Connor Wheatley, Reece Morgan, Remi Sutton, Junior Baker, Sam West, Jordan Clark (Solomon Coker 81), Ronnie Winn, James Goode, Ross Wall, Harry Cook (Glenn Poole 62), Ross GleedUnused: Joe Insole, George Winn, Nathan Okoye
