Heybridge Swifts 0 v 5 Thurrock
Heybridge Swifts 0 Thurrock 5
Ryman League North
Report by Mike Tongue
The fixtures calendar and cup contention had conspired to give Thurrock a ten day break between fixtures. Prior to this hiatus Thurrock were on a three game unbeaten run and travelled to Scraley Road looking to extend the run to four games. Far from being rusty Thurrock were a cohesive unit as they strode to a comprehensive victory and moved up the table a further two place into ninth courtesy of five goals by five different players and the third clean sheet in four games to maintain the league’s best defensive record.
An early chance for Heybridge as they get into the box from the right wing but Bobby Mason easily smothers the shot. Heybridge are caught offside and Mason finds Hussain Jaffa who flicks the ball onto Mark Onyemah, Onyemah sets the returning David Cowley who curls the ball just beyond the far upright. Cowley holds the ball away from three defenders before finding Remi Sutton, Sutton fails to get a clean contact and Danny Sambridge has an easy save. But eleven minutes in and Thurrock break the deadlock. Sutton takes a throw to Cowley and gets the ball back and works his way into the box to win a corner. Cowley takes the corner which is cleared back to Cowley to get a second chance to whip the ball in to be headed over the bar for a corner on the other side. Glenn Poole sent the ball to the six yard box where Richard Halle has ghosted in from the edge of the box and nearly breaks the net with a bullet header.
Another Sutton throw to Cowley is played back to Poole who hits the ball first time high into the box where Charlie Stimson controls the ball, finds half a yard and curls the ball under Sambridge only to see the ball come back off the upright, Jaffa gets a toe to the ball but somehow Sambridge gets a hand to the ball to push it wide of the post. Nine minutes after the first goal came the second, Richard Halle pops a deft ball over the Swifts defence where Onyemah has beaten the offside trap, he steadies himself before deftly shooting past Sambridge into the side netting.
Heybridge nearly pull one back but first Jaffa blocks before Halle clears off the line. A further nine minutes have passed since the last goal and Onyemah works his way into the box again before his progress is stopped, he plays the ball out to Cowley on the right wing, Cowley crosses to the far post to find Stimson who glances his header inside the post.
Poole and Cowley keep the ball in the middle of the pitch before finding Reece Morgan on the right wing, Morgan brings the ball forwards before crossing deep for Sutton who takes the ball on the half volley but over the bar.
Heybridge started the second half looking to get back in the game and Mason is forced to punch clear, the follow up shot clears the bar. Heybridge break through again but Jaffa is across to put in an important tackle. Thurrock settle and Jordan Clark repeats his first half performance breaking the play and leaving George Winn, Richard Halle and Hussain Jaffa little to do for extended periods. Cowley, Stimson and Sutton are one touching the ball around on the left wing before a low cross is fizzed in Onyemah’s direction but Sambridge beats him to the ball.
Halfway through and Joe Christou replaces Clark and receives Sutton’s throw before finding Morgan who in turn finds Stimson, a low cross for Onyemah is cut out by Riley Baker. Back in control Thurrock are patient and take some ten passes around the midfield before Cowley gets a sight at goal from the edge of the area but straight at the keeper. Christou wins the ball and links up again with Morgan, Morgan powers down the wing leaving his marker trailing and surges into the box to the bye-line but sees his cross cut out by Phil Anderson. Again Thurrock are comfortable playing the ball around the area waiting for the opportunity to open and it is Stimson who gets the shot which hits the post and comes out again, Stimson’s follow up is caught by Sambridge.
Thurrock’s persistence pays off after thirty minutes. Ronnie Winn, who has replaced Onyemah, gets the ball just inside the side of the area and plays it to space just in front of Cowley, a little dink forwards looks too long for Stimson but he somehow gets a toe to the ball to keep it in play and ping it into the air where Reece Morgan outjumps keeper and defender to loop his header into the far corner for his first Thurrock goal.
Stimson is replaced by Michael Pindy a few minutes later and brings Thurrock forwards in a strong counter attack but his cross is too close to the keeper. With a couple of minutes of normal time left Pindy is again unleashed to steam away down the middle of the pitch before confidently stroking the ball past Sambridge to also score his first Thurrock goal and round out a fine team performance.
