reading-1LIBRARY volunteers who have given their time were recognised at a
celebration event at Thameside Theatre last month (18 October).

The volunteers aged between 13 and 16 gave up their time over the
summer holidays to help the library team with the Summer Reading
Challenge.

In total, more than 2,000 hours – or over 83 days – were volunteered
over the holidays. Certificates were presented by Deputy Mayor Cllr
Tunde Ojetola, Cllr Sue MacPherson and Senior Librarian, Rachel
Gallehawk, and special awards given to those who contributed the most
hours.

Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Cllr Sue MacPherson, said: “After
working hard all year at school, to then help our library team is
really special. I’m staggered at the number of volunteers we had and
the hours they put in.

“This is also a great way to boost volunteering hours for young people
doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

“I want to thank each and every young person who gave up their time to
volunteer.”
