TWO teams from the Gateway Academy recently attended the Thames Gateway heat of this year’s Kids’ Lit Quiz. Open to students in Year 7 and 8, over 400 schools take part in the UK heats and there are also heats in New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The quiz was brought to the UK in 2003 by Wayne Mills, a lecturer at Auckland University in New Zealand who was named in the 2011 Queen’s New Year’s Honours for services to education and children’s literature.
Librarian, Mrs Gail Scott, said “Reading is so important for our students and any event that motivates or inspires reading for pleasure can only be applauded. The quiz covers every type of fiction from the classics to the contemporary. It was a great opportunity for our students to join with others who have a real passion for reading. They fully entered into the spirit of the quiz and competed well.”
