A GROUP of children from Olive AP Academy have said thank you for a pair of donations which mean they can enjoy playing football on the brand new 3G pitch at the Lakeside Sports Ground in Thurrock with the correct, safe footwear.
The Thurrock Association Sunday League recently had the new pitch installed at their Lakeside home and Olive Academy, from South Ockendon, use the facility under the tutelage of Academy 1 Sports College, who are based at Lakeside and Thurrock FC. Academy 1 deliver PE and any extra off-site provision Olive Academy need.
3G pitches require users to wear specific footwear at the facility to protect themselves and the surface, so Academy 1 approached the league to see if funding would be available to provide a Boot Bank so these children, and others, could use the pitch as part of their curriculum. Alec Berry, Essex’s FA Council Member who’s also linked to the league, took up the challenge. He was able to obtain the necessary funding from the FA Chairman’s Fund.
Also contributing was Tommy South, Chairman of Thurrock FC, so the children visited local sports stores to purchase their football boots, ensuring they all had the correct sizes. Academy 1 then created the Boot Bank for use when the Olive Academy were having lessons at Lakeside Sports Ground so every child was able to take part with the activities.
