Get into exercise down at RSPB in Purfleet

RUN, Climb, Cycle … we have something for everyone here at Rainham Marshes nature reserve. All of our activities are suitable for all ages and abilities. RSPB Rainham Marshes is a fantastic nature reserve in Purfleet, south Essex on the banks of the River Thames – just a stone’s throw away from London. We manage and protect the land for many species including marsh harriers, lapwing, water voles and marsh frogs. There is also a shop and café and a wildlife garden as well as an adventure play area. A full events programme offers something for everyone.

Rainham Marshes is a fantastic place to come for a run! With the River Thames on one side and the marshes on the other, your run will be accompanied by birds of prey or the occasional pursuing seal. All of the paths are off road with a great surface to run on. From 3km to 12km routes within the reserve boundary – there is something for everyone! Stop off after your run for a cup of tea with views over the reserve. You could always join our weekly running group – ‘The Rainham Harriers’.
Hire out one of our bikes for the day and explore along the River Thames – look out for seals basking on the shoreline and kestrels hunting overhead. You could also go on one of our guided cycle rides to learn a little bit more about the wildlife and history over at the marshes.

Nordic Walking is fast becoming the ‘go to’ health and exercise regime for many people of all ages across the country. If you have your Freedom Pass, join us here for regular walks, or join one of the ‘Learn to Walk’ sessions! Nordic walking is a full-body exercise which improves posture, is easy on the joints and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Adventure along the river wall and feel the benefits of Nordic Pole Walking and exploring nature along the way.

Come and climb on our boulders! Go up and down or round and round, bouldering at Rainham is for everyone from experienced climbers to those who have never climbed before. Come and give it a go and give yourself a challenge. Look out for our workshops where staff will be on hand to give you tips and techniques to develop your skills.

There are plenty of other activities you can get involved in at Rainham Marshes, from orienteering to mini-beast hunting and pond dipping. Get closer to nature and discover something new.
