Tilbury Hold On For A Draw

Tilbury and Haringey Borough had to settle for a point each, after a battling game at Chadfields. The visitors will be disappointed not to take all 3 points, with Tilbury holding on in the final 10 minutes.

After just one minute Jack Barham was denied, before a minute later Haringey took the lead, when a poorly directed header saw Anthony MacDonald latch on to score past Lee Butcher. Both sides had chances in the following 10 minutes, with Lewis Francis crossing only to see a misdirected pass back go just wide and a cross from Daniel Aristidou, that saw Butcher off his line, tipping the ball onto the line where Joe Nightingill cleared to safety. Tilbury had a succession of corners, but could not find the killer touch. On 28 minutes Adrian Markus went round Butcher only to see his effort into an empty net go wide. Markus was again found in space five minutes later and put his shot wide of the post. Tilbury equalised on 37 minutes when Neil Richmond was harshly adjudged to have been brought down in the box and Kurt Smith scored from the spot.

Tilbury started the second half well but Haringey were a danger from quick breaks. On 74 minutes Markus was one on one with Butcher and from nowhere Reece Hewitt tracked back and got his foot in before the shot was unleashed. Ralston Gabriel was the next visitor to see his effort well saved by Butcher. The introduction of Chris Benjamin caused Tilbury problems and within seconds struck from distance that hit the inside of the post. With five minutes to go Haringey had two chances within ten seconds; firstly Benjamin was denied by Butcher and Macdonald then putting a shot wide.

Deep into injury time Gabriel saw his effort striking the bar and Benjamin had the chance to tap home but lost his footing.

The final whistle went and Tilbury would have been the happier of the sides as they held onto take a point that leaves them tenth and three points outside the play off places.

Assistant Manager Danny Smith commented after the game “It was a point gained, rather than two points dropped. It was a disappointing performance, but we remain in touch with the top five.

The Dockers are without a midweek game and travel to AFC Hornchurch on Saturday.
