Thurrock Tories reject chance to delay closure of Thameside Theatre

Thameside Theatre

AN attempt by Labour and UKIP councillors to secure an agreement that the Thameside Theatre would only close when a replacement was up and running was rejected by two Tory councillors.

The matter was discussed at the Corporate and Overview Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday night.

The committee was chaired by cllr John Kent, whom when he was leader of the council between 2010 and 2016 laid great stress on the Thameside Complex only closing when a replacement was “up and running”.

But, as reported in YT, the Thurrock Conservatives took over in May 2016 and have stated that the “Thameside Theatre is likely to close in 2019.”

The clause in a recommendation was supported by Cllrs John Kent and Steve Liddiard (Labour) as well as cllrs Leslie Gamester and Jack Duffin (UKIP).

Conservatives councillors Ben Maney and Aaron Watkins voted against the recommendation.

The recommendation goes through to the Conservative-run cabinet but its power is merely advisory.

After the meeting, cllr Jack Duffin said: “The two Tory Councillors voted to close the Theatre regardless of an alternate being built. There seems to be a shared passion between Conservative Councillors in Thurrock that we should have no theatre in the borough as their reckless obsession for cutting is their number one priority”.
