Thousands raised by sheltered housing in Thurrock

ALMOST 30 sheltered housing complexes across Thurrock joined together to raise £6,000 for Macmillan through coffee morning events.

Thurrock Council’s Sheltered Housing Officers assisted in helping the tenants set up, with some complexes choosing to put on larger events involving the local community.

Tenants advertised through leaflet dropping, putting posters up around the community and arranging prizes which were donated by local businesses.

The coffee mornings were held in November, concluding with a treat for the complex which raised the most – afternoon tea and entertainment from two volunteer singers. This went to the residents of Harty Close – who raised £917 at their complex – at an event on 29 December 2016.

Plans for 2017 are already underway, with tenants at Harty Close looking at further fund raising projects.

Cabinet Member for Children’s and Adult Social Care, Cllr Sue Little, said: “I always say I could not be prouder of our sheltered housing tenants – then they go and do something else amazing.

“£6,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support will make a real difference to people living with and recovering from cancer. I hope the tenants are as proud of themselves as I am of them.

“I want to thank them and the officers who made it all possible.”
