Thurrock residents warned over Storm Doris scamsters

THURROCK residents are being warned to watch out for doorstep salespeople offering to repair damage caused by Storm Doris, who may be a victim to poor workmanship, scams or other crimes.

Thurrock Council’s Trading Standards team have received complaints about traders cold-calling in the borough offering unsolicited home improvement services ranging from loose or unsafe chimney pot and tiles, as well as blocked gutter or drainage.

Residents struggling to find a reputable trader should find a vetted local trader on the Checkatrade website- checkatrade.com or buy with confidence.

Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Cllr Sue MacPherson, said: “Unscrupulous rogue traders take advantage of big weather events to secure work with people – especially those who are elderly or vulnerable – whose property has been damaged.

“However, they are likely either to carry out a poor job, charge inflated prices or pressure residents into having unnecessary work carried out. Giving them access could sometimes result in distraction burglary.

“You’re far safer to get a recommendation from a friend or relative or look for a trusted trader on Checkatrade’s website – and buy with confidence.”

To report a cold caller contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.
