Rugby: Frustrating afternoon for Thurrock

North Walsham 47 v 14 Thurrock

THE score line has no reflection on the game and in the words of the home side stated that this was a ‘stunning victory’ Such a result looked highly improbable after the hosts had been pinned back deep in their territory for the first half hour, but two converted tries in the final five minutes of the first half gave them a 14 – 0 halftime lead. Within five minutes of the restart they then doubled their score and there was no way back for the shocked visitors.

Thurrock had won their last two games convincingly against quality opposition and began confidently. Five minutes in Nat Farrell broke through from deep and was well tackled just two metres out. This heralded a ten minute spell when play was exclusively in the home twenty two and included six five metre scrums to Thurrock. Twice Thurrock being held up over the line .The momentum continued to be with Thurrock throughout the first twenty five minutes although their scoring opportunities were few despite superiority in the scrums. The Vikings broke out occasionally but were soon back defending. Fifteen minutes from half time Thurrock’s Jake Barrand hit a post with a long range penalty.

Gradually the home side came into it more. Ryan Oakes won a Thurrock lineout on the Vikings’ twenty two and soon afterwards strong runs from Brown and Jordan Mustard penetrated the visitors’ defence. Five minutes before half time, with their first concerted attack they scored, Jake Duffield converted. The game had suddenly changed and now it was the Vikings pouring forward; on the stroke of half time Will Findlay tapped a five metre penalty to nip over for a converted try, harshly Jake Barrand was sin binned for a pass hitting his arm.

The home side scored four tries in the third quarter, three converted. And made Thurrock pay being down to 14 men for the first 9 minutes of the second half. In the first minute they won a rare turnover on halfway and quick hands took the ball to Brown who evaded five defenders over fifty metres. Four minutes later James Knight scored scored twice before assisting Browes to score 40 – 0, twenty minutes left.

North Walsham looked as if they would not concede but tries from Troy Michie and Jake Barrand, who converted both, deservedly got Thurrock on the scoreboard. Sandwiched between a Mustard try.
