Letter to Editor: Under no circumstances should there be a crossing

Jackie Doyle Price Remain

Dear Editor,

JACKIE Doyle-Price is said to be ‘disappointed’ her preferred option, route four was discredited.

She should have been consistently telling the government that there should be NO MORE CROSSINGS in the Lower Thames.

As for Stephen Metcalfe, well he’s pleased the Secretary of State said that he looked closely at our arguments and considered alternatives.

How weak of the pair of them!

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THERE BE A NEW CROSSING!

Bear with me a bit longer:

1963: Dartford Tunnel opens.
1980: Second tunnel opens. To relieve congestion.
1986: M25 opens. Brings even more traffic.
1991: Queen Elizabeth II bridge opens. To relieve congestion.

Bear with me a bit longer:

2003: Capital repayment of the crossing. Under the original agreement when the bridge was built, tolling was supposed to stop once it had paid for itself.
2013: Sold to SANEF, a French company. To relieve congestion.

Bear with me a bit longer:

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling revealed the new Lower Thames Crossing will run through: Ockendon, Orsett and Tilbury. I wonder how many people have been ordered out of their homes? How much Green Belt Land has been stolen?

“Mr Grayling believes the scheme will alleviate traffic at the busy (understatement) Dartford Crossing…”

Thank you for your patience, but if you will just bear with me a bit longer:

2012: “Thurrock… one of the most polluted places in the UK. Air in the borough is teaming with fine particles called PM2.5s which primarily come from vehicle exhaust fumes and are said to be the most lethal.”

According to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) Thurrock came out as the 4th worst area outside London, for the number of PM2.5s in the air with an average of 13.8 micrograms per cubic metre of air.”

It is believed that air pollution can be a cause of angina, heart attacks, asthma, bronchitis, cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Again, I say:

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THERE BE A NEW CROSSING!

I’m exhausted.
