Celebration evening at South Essex College

South Essex June 17

SOUTH Essex College celebrated student success at last night’s annual awards evening.

Students, their families and staff attended the Celebrating Success event at the College’s Southend Campus.

Guest speaker and former student, Gareth Read, handed out awards to top students in each department from all three campuses.

Gareth studied engineering and electrical installation at the College after being away from education for 14 years. He’s now 38 and travels the world as a print finishing engineer dealing with breakdowns, maintenance and operator training.

He said: “My journey was extremely hard work but so worth it for the opportunities that have opened up for me. It’s never too late to strive for something, if you’re determined you can do it!”

A student champion was picked from all the winners. Phoebe Morris won Business and ICT student of the year Southend and overall student of the year.

Phoebe, 20, from Southend studies on the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy course at the College and runs her own cupcake business alongside her education.

She said: “Everyone at the College has been so supportive, especially my tutor Steve, who is always pushing us to achieve. I’ve loved studying here.”

Guests were treated to food, drinks, entertainment provided by Music students from the College and a lively ceremony hosted by radio presenter Dom Atkins, all in glitzy surroundings.
