ORSETT and Thurrock surged to the top of the 1st XI Division One table with a nail-biting win at home against Hadleigh & Thundersley.

The visitors elected to bat first, but thanks to a superb opening spell by Umaad Sultan (4-17) they were struggling with the score on 39-5. Max Holmes (46) and Luke Smith (58) put on 82 for the 6th wicket before Holmes dismissed by Agha Tahir (4-30), with Smith removed by Shahid Khan (2-44) not long afterwards. H&T eventually stumbled to 158 all out.

With such a low total to defend, Hadleigh & Thundersley had to take early wickets to give themselves a chance. Richard Revell took the first five wickets to fall, including Paul Bennett (51), as the hosts were left reeling on 61-5. A couple of mini-partnerships took the score to 114, however, eight wickets were lost. But Tahir (41*) and Khan (27*) made vital contributions, as they put on 45 crucial runs to seal the win.
