Cricket: Horndon Thirds win promotion

Horndon-on-the-Hill 1st xi 203ao v Loughton 1st xi 206-7

Horndon’s first eleven travelled to 4th place Loughton on Saturday. The home side won the toss and elected to field first. The home side’s spinners restricted Horndon well and wickets fell throughout the innings despite a high run rate. Horndon managed a respectable 203, Jeff West Jnr top scoring with 69 and Connor Hammond with 30. Loughton received a huge 56 overs in return due to Horndon speeding through their overs. Loughton used their time well and a middle order partnership between Harry Watson (46) and Niketh Shetty (32) got the over the line with an over to go.

Horndon-on-the-Hill 2nd xi 114-5 v Woodford Green 2nd xi 110-9

Horndon 2’s got back to winning ways with a comfortable win over Woodford Green. Bowling first the home side were destructive with the ball and bowled the visitors out for just 110. Tom Piggott and Dan Petts picked up 4 wickets each as Sean Martin (37) was the only batsman to get out of single figures. Horndon chased the total in 27 overs, Danny Freemen (41*) and James Stitson (26) with the bulk of the runs.

Horndon-on-the-Hill 3rd xi 130-3 v Hutton 4th xi 129ao

HORNDON 3rd eleven were crowned champions on Saturday as they bulldozed Hutton 4xi. Winning the toss and batting the visitors were bowled out for 129. Alan Patmore picked up 4 wickets and Jack Outten took 3 as the visitors tail order collapsed after a good start form the openers. Horndon chased the total in style making 130 in 21 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Harry Philpot who has had a fine season top scored with 44 not out and was backed up by Mark Witts (39). It has been a brilliant season for the third string to be promoted after heartbreak in the final game last year.
