UKIP leader backs Grammar Schools in Thurrock as an answer to low social mobility ranking

EARLIER this week, a report was released showing that Thurrock is ranked 224th out of 324 based on the chance of social mobility by local authority.

UKIP Thurrock Group Leader Cllr Graham Snell said: “It is incredibly important the Government deals with their successive failures when it comes to social mobility. Over the last twenty years we have seen a tragic decline in the levels of social mobility across the UK. To see Thurrock near the bottom of this list is very disappointing. The disastrous polices of consecutive Tory and Labour Government’s has meant that working class people in Thurrock have been left behind.

“We need to see our education system embrace technical colleges and show respect for vocational qualifications. Unfortunately since Tony Blair ruined Education, Education, Education in the UK, we have seen both the Conservatives and Labour throw their weight behind the idea that young people must go to university to succeed. This is wrong and incredibly damaging.

“I call on the Government to take action and set up a new grammar school and a technical college in Thurrock. Considering it is their mess that has caused this problem it should be down to them to fix it. Lets make Thurrock a beacon of Social Mobility rather than accept being the left behind community that this report says we are.”
