Residential care boost for South Ockendon

Sue Little

A report heard at Cabinet last week (Wednesday 13 December) approved a new strategy for ensuring current and future demand for residential care is met.

It included proposals of a new development in South Ockendon with accommodation and services ‘fit for the 21st Century’ and recommended further work to consider the detail – including funding the construction of the new facility.

The facility could provide 30 ensuite bedrooms for Interim Care and 45 small self-contained flats for those needing permanent residential and nursing care services. It could also have communal lounges, a restaurant, full catering kitchen, specialist bathrooms, treatment rooms and residents’ gardens.

Portfolio Holder for Social Care, Cllr Sue Little, said: “It is not new to say that more people will become reliant on care services. It certainly isn’t a specific challenge in Thurrock, but one being faced nationwide.

“I believe we should be exploring all avenues to keep our older population safe and independent in high quality facilities. This new building will be in addition to the many fantastic services and residential care homes we currently have in the borough.”
