Discover Hidden Gems at May Day Community Festival

Hidden Gems Thurrock:
May Day Community Festival
Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2018 | South Ockendon Centre

THURROCK CVS and Creative Blast bring the Hidden Gems project to a close this Bank Holiday Monday 7th May with a free community celebration at the green on the South Ockendon Centre from 11am-3pm. The day will feature a host of activities and a platform to showcase multitude of styles and genres for people to enjoy; as well as opportunities to chat, meet new people and sample free food and refreshments.

On the day, visitors can expect to take part in a juggling and circus skills workshop with the former Young British Juggling Champion, Arthur Hyman, as well as a performance and a chance to try out Bollywood Dance moves with D-Style Dance Company. There will also be some very special guests from the Thai Dance department at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok, who are briefly visiting the UK for some London shows and workshops. As well as this, a number of local dance schools will be showcasing their very varied talents, including Tip-Toe Dance School, the SOCF Street Dancerz and Drumenagh Irish Dance Group.

There’s a chance to take part in some live painting with local artists Jane Lock, Arooj Khan, Steve Lawes, Becky Bowden and Kara Thompson, as they create collaborative pieces throughout the day. There will be also be an opportunity to buy locally made artworks and take part in craft activities, with some local artists hosting their own stalls. Thurrock-based crafters-for-toddlers Krafti Kitti will be running activities for toddlers, and a selection of Kinetika’s Thurrock 100 flags will be on display on site.

Smallz Deep’s Uncxt Studios, based in Grays, will be providing a line up of aspiring MCs who will be performing a Hip-Hop/Grime Cypher, where rappers take turns to rhyme over instrumentals, featuring Chafford-based rapper Kage Solitaire and Thurrock Lifestyle Solution’s DJs will be helping resident soundman Duff Paddy keep people dancing throughout the day, with plenty of opportunities to join in with traditional maypole dancing to Zumba and dance for toddlers with Bopalong!

This event follows a brilliant series of workshops and events which have reached over 800 local people, provided work and skills development for 10 local artists, created volunteering opportunities for many local people and fostered conversations about access to creativity and community life whilst uncovering some of the more positive and inspiring aspects of the borough’s culture and heritage. The project will be remembered in the summer with a photo exhibition of local people who have shared their Hidden Gems, which will tour local libraries and community centres.

The Hidden Gems May Day Community Festival will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May from 11am to 3pm at the South Ockendon Centre and is FREE to attend. To find out more about this event and how you can get involved call 01375 386247 or visit
