Thurrock Indys welcome Small Nation World Cup to Aveley (but think that Thurrock Council should have done more)

THIS week will see four matches in the CONIFA World Cup held at the Parkside Stadium, the home of Aveley FC. This is a truly wonderful event and we urge everyone to consider attending. The competition is open to nations not recognised by FIFA and has seen teams from across the world come to the UK.

Matches will be played on:

Tuesday 5th June 6pm
Thursday 7th June 12pm
Saturday 9th June at 12pm and 3pm.

Details of the matches and tickets can be found using the following link:

Party Leader, Cllr Luke Spillman said; “It was a great honour for CONIFA to select a club within Thurrock to hold four matches. However, you wouldn’t believe this from the complete lack of promotion and engagement from Thurrock Council. This could have been a huge cultural event in partnership with several local agencies but Thurrock Council dropped the ball on this event and missed out on this great opportunity. I wrote to the Council on the 2nd April 2018 asking them to engage with the event. The event was publicised by all of the local news providers. It has also received considerable national press.

“Over many years Thurrock Council has continued to demonstrate that it has a ‘bare minimum’ attitude to sport, culture and community. It really isn’t good enough. In October 2017, East Thurrock, were a game away from reaching the FA cup First Round yet this didn’t even register with anyone at the Council. The Thurrock T-birds women’s rugby team, the most successful team sporting story in the borough, have been similarly ignored by Thurrock Council.

“At June’s Full Council we will be entering a motion which aims to make sure that the continued negligence from Thurrock Council to engage with sport in Thurrock is finally kicked into touch.”

  1. Well said Cllr Spillman. At long last someone in public life in Thurrock has spoken up for Sport.
