AN exhibition marking Tilbury’s connection with the Empire Windrush started at Tilbury Hub on Friday 25May and is open to the public until Wednesday 20 June 2018.

The exhibition is being hosted by the Tilbury Riverside Project which is working in partnership with the Port of Tilbury and Thurrock Council to also mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of Windrush at Tilbury Docks on Friday 22June.

Tilbury Riverside Project secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and has been working with volunteers, local partners and colleagues from across London boroughs to plan for to mark this year’s anniversary.

On 27 May 1948 the Empire Windrush set sail from Jamaica to Tilbury – and the rest they say is history! The exhibition is timed to mark the departure of the ship which brought migrants, troops, lower deck passengers and a few stowaways into Tilbury.

Cllr Deborah Huelin, Portfolio Holder for Communities said: ‘The arrival of the Empire Windrush to Tilbury Docks is not only an important part of our local heritage, but it marked the birth of multi-cultural Britain and it is important that we celebrate the contribution of the Windrush generation to our country.

This exhibition will raise local awareness of the Windrush story, as well as promoting a key community event planned to mark the 70th anniversary of the arrival of Windrush on Friday 22 June from 1pm to 6pm. This is due to be a wonderful event, free to all and I encourage residents to visit both the exhibition and the event at the cruise terminal’
