Swimming: Harrison and Tilly impress at National Champs

HARRISON Jarvis and Tilly Mayes both represent Thurrock Swimming Club at this year’s National Swimming Championships which were held in Sheffield.

Harrison competed in both the British and National Summer events. This was the first time Harrison had competed in these championships and was very nervous. In the 200 breast in the British Championship, Harrison swam a time of 2.35 which was just outside of his life time best and he just missed out on a top 10 position.

However, Harrison came first in the National Summer Championships on the 100 breast, smashing his personal best time by over 2 seconds. In the heats Harrison achieved a time of 1.11.34 which was 1.3seconds faster than his life time best. He went into the finals first and swam the first 50m in a best time (32.92) and then improved his 2nd 50m by over a second compared to the heats to finish 1st in a time of 1.10.16. In the 50m breast, Harrison achieved a 0.4 second best time to reach the final with a time of 32.56.

In the final, he once again stepped up to gain a bronze medal in his less favoured breaststroke event with another improved time of 32.25.

Tilly was competing in her second National Summer Championships. In the heats of the 50m fly, she posted a time of 29.90 which ensured her pathway into her first National final. In the final Tilly came 10th just fractionally outside of her heat time – 30.25. Congratulations to both swimmers.
