RESIDENTS on a Thurrock caravan and mobile home site who watched anxiously as firefighters fought a blaze that threatened their homes have responded by donating thousands of pounds to charity.
Last month more than 80 firefighters toiled for six hours as they tackled a huge grass fire in South Ockendon, on land next to a large site homing travelling showpeople in Buckles Lane.
Residents there have responded by presenting a cheque to the Firefighters’ Charity at Hogg Lane fire station.
Long term site resident John Biddall said: “We are very lucky, in many senses. We are lucky with the excellent service, and we are lucky we have been been able to raise a whisker away from £4,000.
“It could have been a tragedy, but thankfully everything is okay. It was outstanding, it really was, and we cannot be thankful enough.”
