AT next weeks Essex County Council, Tory Councillors from across the county, will be taking turns to stand up and celebrate their Government’s Thames Crossing proposals claims the Thurrock Independents.
The Tory group at Essex County Council has entered the following motion. ‘This Council fully supports the Government’s announcement of its preferred Option C for the proposed new Lower Thames Crossing.’
Thurrock Independents Party Leader, Cllr Luke Spillman, said: “The current plans for the Thames Crossing, if followed through, will be an unrivalled disaster for Thurrock. Swathes of greenbelt will be destroyed, the congestion problems we face will be worse, not better, and we will be walking into catastrophic environmental consequences.
“It’s about time we saw some leadership from the Tory administration at Thurrock Council on this issue. After all we’ve seen nothing other than lip service so far. We demand that the Thurrock Conservatives, for once, put the people Thurrock before party loyalty. They must be unequivocal in their criticism of this motion and their government.
“Thurrock’s Tories appear, yet again, to be missing in action. They have shown gross negligence over the Thames Crossing and proposed a catastrophic Local Plan which will increase the population of Thurrock by over 100,000 people. They appear to be fixated on driving Thurrock into an environmental disaster.
“It’s deeply disappointing to see a Conservative Party without a democratic mandate, with the support of just one in three Thurrock voters, being allowed to inflict such damage upon Thurrock. Thurrock deserves so much better.”
