THURROCK Council is urging residents to have their say and make sure they are registered to vote before Thurrock goes to the polls on Thursday 2 May.
In order to cast a vote, residents must be on the electoral register. The deadline to apply to register is fast approaching and will close at midnight on Friday 12 April. Registration takes just five minutes online at gov.uk/register-to-vote or call the council elections office on 01375 652 816.
Registered residents can choose to vote by post. Contact the council elections office at email@example.com or call 01375 652 816. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Monday 15 April.
Voting by proxy is an option for residents who wish to appoint someone to vote on their behalf in a polling station. Contact the elections office at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01375 652 816. The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April.
Local elections will take place in 16 out of 20 wards where residents can vote for the councillors who will represent them at a local level. The wards are Aveley & Uplands, Belhus, Chadwell St Mary, Chafford & North Stifford, Corringham & Fobbing, East Tilbury, Grays Riverside, Grays Thurrock, Little Thurrock Rectory, Ockendon, Stanford East & Corringham Town, Stanford-le-Hope West, Stifford Clays, The Homesteads, Tilbury Riverside & Thurrock Park, and West Thurrock & South Stifford.
Local council elections will not be held in Little Thurrock Blackshots, Orsett, South Chafford and Tilbury St Chads wards. In each election only a third of councillors in the borough stand, meaning these two-councillor wards will not be contested this time.
In the wards where elections are being held, one candidate will be elected per ward apart from in Chadwell St Mary where two candidates will be elected following the resignation of Cllr Barbara Rice, which created an additional vacancy.
