Resident to cycle 100 miles for St Luke’s Hospice

BASILDON resident Dave Penson will be embarking on the Prudential RideLondon 100-mile cycle challenge to raise money for St. Luke’s Hospice in memory of his mother.

A keen cyclist, Dave had always considered taking part in a cycle event. However losing his mother Maureen in March spurred him on to sign up to this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday 4th August.

On his Just Giving page, Dave explains:

“To be honest, I’ve never really thought about doing RideLondon. Maybe it was the infamy of Box Hill, I’m not sure, but it’s never been ‘on my list’ so to speak. I’ve always intended to do a 100 mile cycling event, but it has never actually happened. Last March, we lost our mum. She has always been a supporter of St. Luke’s Hospice, and whilst thumbing through random bits on Facebook, I saw them asking for riders for RideLondon.

“Due to Mums support of this good cause I looked a little more and when I saw it was on the 4th of August, the day before what would’ve been Mum’s 77th Birthday. My mind was made up.

“The furthest I’ve ever done in one day is about 66 miles and that was a little while ago. It is a challenge, but it is for a good cause, so I’m confident I’ll do it (even though I’m sure mum would’ve said I’m crazy).”

Inspired by London’s 2012 Olympic road race, the 100-mile RideLondon route takes riders through the capital and out into Surrey past iconic landmarks on closed roads before finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.

There’s still a chance to sign up to this event. For more information, visit or contact the Fundraising team at St. Luke’s Hospice on 01268 524973.
