New phase of roadworks on London Road in Grays

London Road West Thurrock

CADENT has begun the second phase of a major scheme to replace ageing gas mains in Thurrock with tough new pipes which should last until the dawn of the 22nd century.

Engineers recently started work to install tough new gas pipes in London Road between between Motherwell Way and West Thurrock Way.

Road users are being reminded that London Road has been closed to westbound traffic between the two junctions with some parking bays also temporarily suspended. Local traffic is being diverted via West Thurrock Way and Motherwell Way, while through traffic is being diverted via Oliver Road and St Clement’s Way. This traffic management is needed to enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently.

The work is scheduled to continue until October 2019.

Local shops and businesses will remain open for business as usual throughout the project and gas supplies should be maintained.

The project is the second phase of a five-year programme to renew the gas mains network in Thurrock. Last year engineers completed the first phase of the project replacing gas mains from the east side of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge to Motherwell Way, along with a section on the west side of the bridge. The work forms part of a five-year programme to replace ageing gas mains in Thurrock with highly durable new pipes.

The new pipes will help ensure local people stay connected to safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking for decades and also cut the number of repairs needed on ageing gas mains and associated disruption.

Cadent Authorising Engineer Michael Morris said: “We’re doing all can to deliver this essential work with as little disruption as possible.

“Our preparations have included discussions with the local authority, carrying out underground technical surveys and hosted a public exhibition.”

He added: “The tough new pipes we’re installing will help reduce disruption in the future as well as helping to ensure local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies to the dawn of the 22nd century.”

The project’s Community Relations Team can be contacted on 0800 389 8261 or for more information. For 24-hour operational enquiries people should call 0800 096 5678.

This work is part of Cadent’s ongoing investment across its network to replace and upgrade old gas mains with safer and more durable modern pipes.
