ANOTHER sunny mornings litter picking at Grays Beach last Sunday. The fifteen volunteers collected 20 sacks of rubbish which included 165 single use plastic bottles.
The group trialled a new process of sieving the smaller plastics from the decaying vegetation. It’s proving a very efficient way of removing lots of the smallest plastics very quickly. We even picked up microplastic nodules (similar to the ones shown in the picture below) from the Grays foreshore.
This is a very exciting development because at all the foreshore locations that we collect plastics from we witness small fragments of plastic that previously had proved difficult or near impossible to remove. This method makes it relatively quick and easy to remove the smallest plastic and polystyrene fragments before they are washed into the oceans.
