ESSEX Firefighters were called to reports of a large fire at a landfill site on North Road, South Ockendon this morning.
On arrival, crews confirmed that the fire had spread across an area of around 300 square metres.
In order to establish a good supply of water, the officer-in-charge also requested support from a Water Bowser (a vehicle which stores and transports a large amount of water).
Crews also used an off-road vehicle to enable them to reach areas of the fire that were difficult to access.
By 5.43am, firefighters had managed to contain the fire to an area of 50 square metres.
At 8am, crews were continuing to monitor the site.
By 10.30am, the fire had been contained to an area of approximately 20 square metres. Crews are being supported by on-site mechanical diggers to help sift through waste to allow them to remove hotspots.
The fire was extinguished completely by 11am. The cause has been recorded as accidental.
Due to the large amount of smoke, we recommend that if you live or work nearby you keep your windows and doors closed for the remainder of the day (Monday 9 September).
