University Centre stands out with mental health support
UNIVERSITY Centre South Essex has created a range of projects to provide its students with support when managing their own mental health and wellbeing.
The University Centre, with campuses in Southend and Thurrock, has trained staff to become mental health first aiders, put on mental health workshops with MIND and provided students with the emotional fitness app, FIKA.
The mental health first aiders project aims to raise awareness of issues that may be faced by both staff and students. A number of higher education staff members have already been trained with the aim to make sure all staff have received the training in the near future.
MIND is holding sessions initially aimed at year one students, to make sure students have the tools and resources to manage their own mental wellbeing.
FIKA is an application students can download and access the premium service for free. The app is designed for university students and covers a range of topics including a five minute daily mental workout, making friends, giving presentations and sleep support.
Nikki Hill, HE Student Engagement Officer, said: “We know that if students can learn to deal with their stress and anxiety issues plus improve their relationships then it gives them a greater sense of belonging. We want students to feel happy, safe and supported so they can succeed in their studies.”
