SILENCE FROM THE TORY HEALTH LEAD AT THE FIRST CABINET MEETING SINCE LOCKDOWN STARTED
AT the first Tory Cabinet meeting of Thurrock Council in three months there was no substantial item on agenda addressing Covid 19 or its impact on Thurrock’s residents.
Whilst half the Cabinet took the first part of the meeting to make a number of update statements, the Councillor responsible for Health didn’t speak one word.
Cllr Victoria Holloway, Labour Portfolio Holder for Health said “I’m astonished at the Cabinet member’s silence. The world hasn’t seen a pandemic of this kind for 100 years and its impact will be widespread and long-term.
Not only has Covid had its impact on the residents of Thurrock, the number of non Covid related deaths in Thurrock has sadly increased during lockdown.
There has also been a reduction in people seeking medical attention for both their physical and mental health and this lack of intervention and diagnosis will have a serious long term impact on residents and Thurrock’s health system.
The health inequalities in Thurrock were already stark before the pandemic, this will have increased those inequalities and it appears the Portfolio Holder is happy to sit in silence. It’s disgraceful.”
