COUNCILLOR John Kent, Leader of Thurrock Council Labour Group, commenting on news that rapidly rising Coronavirus infections numbers mean Thurrock will subject to strict Tier 3 restrictions from 00.01 tomorrow (Wednesday 16 December) said:
“While it’s very frustrating that despite so many people doing the right thing by not seeing friends and loved ones, sticking to social distancing rules, not mixing with others and wearing masks, we have still seen the rapid spread of Coronavirus in our part of Essex since we entered Tier 2.
“The numbers don’t lie, it was inevitable Thurrock would be placed into Tier 3 and a stricter regime.
“Our priority in the coming weeks, must be to do all we can to drive down local infections rates, so we can return to some form of normal life until the vaccine is widely available. The best way to do this is by being vigilant and sticking to the rules.
“I know this is a further body blow for many Thurrock businesses. After such a dreadful trading year for many local businesses, particularly those in catering, retail and hospitality sectors, a profitable festive season could be the difference between success or failure.
“That’s why its so important Thurrock Council now steps in with help and support. The Council must make the strongest possible case to Government to get the support Thurrock businesses need; it can no longer be a passive bystander, while so many local businesses face a battle for survival.”
