IT was very much a night for the bookmakers at Chelmsford on Thursday evening as six of the seven races went the way of short-price favourites on the all-weather card.
Jockey Billy Loughnane had a nice double on the card and it was Sir Rodneyredblood who was the only runner to win on the card that wasn’t at the top of the market, winning the class six handicap for trainer John Jenkins at odds of 16/5.

The opening contest of the evening was a class five contest over a mile for novices and it was won by the very short price favourite Port Light, sent off a 1-4 chance for trainer Archie Watson. Jockey Hollie Doyle steered the runner to a comfortable five length victory over Crack On Boys in second and Daddy Chill in third.
Another favourite landed race two of the Chelmsford card in Kitaro Kich landing the seven furlong handicap in class six but tree and a quarter lengths from Bint Havana Gold under a good ride from Neil Callan, keeping on well in the final furlong having been a bit free early on in the contest.
Nine runners tackled the six furlong handicap in class five in race three of the evening and this was won by another favourite, Jesse Luc (13/8), a one and three quarter length scorer from 18/1 outsider Francisco and Southbank was back in third a further quarter of a length behind.
The favourites continued to land the spoils when Zooks emerged victorious in the class six handicap at 7.00, sent off a 2-1 chance for trainer Ian Williams and the impressive young Billy Loughnane on board. Zooks was prominent from the off, made clear headway four furlongs from home and kept on to score handily to land the £3,663 top prize.
State Of Madness couldn’t keep up the run of favourites winning as he was a well-beaten fifth in the class six handicap, with Sir Rodneyredblood landing the spoils at 16-5 odds, narrowly winning by a neck over So Obsessed in second.
The penultimate race of the evening was back to form for the favourites as 4/6 shot Elterwater got the job done to bring up a double on the card for jockey Loughnane, scoring by one and a half lengths from Egoiste and true to form, another favourite landed the finale as 6/4 shot Urban Lion was a half a length winner from Shimmering Spin for the Jack Channon yard.
