Tram link alternative to Canvey third road proposed

A TRAM link connecting Canvey with Benfleet and Thurrock could offer a long‑term solution to the island’s chronic congestion problems, according to proposals by the team behind the Thames Gateway Tramlink project reports the Local Democracy Reporter.

Castle Point Council is lobbying Government for funding to progress long‑awaited plans for a third road access to the island, arguing residents and businesses face daily disruption caused by gridlock on existing routes.

But the KenEx tram project – a light rail scheme intended to link the Ebbsfleet regeneration area in Kent with Grays – has suggested a tram‑based crossing could provide a safer and more sustainable alternative to a new road bridge.
In a statement, the organisation said: “Canvey’s growing community means congested roads are a regular sight on routes to the mainland.
“A new road bridge could exacerbate safety and congestion issues on the Manorway and A13 junction, worrying Thurrock residents. Instead, a tram linking c2c Benfleet, Canvey High Street and DP World via a light rail bridge between Canvey and Thurrock could be the answer.”
KenEx spokesperson Matthew Jackson said the idea emerged after the fuel tanker crash at Sadlers Farm in 2023 highlighted the vulnerability of Canvey’s limited road exits.
“Canvey is noted as a COMAH area — something needed to improve,” he said.

He added that a tram crossing over the creek could serve multiple functions and benefit a wider range of people than a road link.
“A bridge connection would contain dual tram lines and a segregated active travel apron connecting into the cycle path network of Thurrock and the Manorway.”

Under the concept, a small tram network would run from Benfleet station through key locations on Canvey before crossing to Thurrock, providing direct access to employment areas. The route could also continue via Corringham to Basildon Hospital. Jackson said the team had looked to Strasbourg for inspiration, where a similar‑scale light rail bridge had proved “very successful”.
However, he stressed funding would be required to accelerate a dedicated study into the crossing option, separate from the project’s current Grays‑to‑Ebbsfleet focus.

Meanwhile, Castle Point Council continues to press the Government to back a road‑based solution.

Earlier this month, council leader Dave Blackwell said: “A third access to Canvey Island is critical for our residents and businesses. It will unlock economic opportunities, improve resilience and address long‑standing transport challenges.
“We are calling on the Government to provide funding for a detailed feasibility study to move this vital project forward.”

  1. I think it will be a good idea for most people but for wheelchair users I think a road along side of this project would suit people who can’t get to a tram station as mobility scooters can’t get on the bus to get any where so I rely on people to put it in to there cars to allow me to get out
