Road policing officers are today renewing their appeal for witnesses to a road crash in south Essex which claimed the life of a Canvey Island man.

The collision happened when a Rover 25 struck a stationary lorry in a layby off the westbound carriageway of the A13 near Stanford-le-Hope shortly before 11am on Wednesday, November 7.

The car driver, a man in his 80s and from Canvey Island, was certified dead at the scene.

Both carriageways were initially closed while emergency workers carried out their work, with the eastbound reopening at midday. The westbound carriageway was closed for approximately five hours while the vehicle was recovered and forensic collision investigators carried out their work.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later today (Thursday) to establish the man’s cause of death, after which HM Coroner will make a decision as to whether an inquest is heard or not.
