Snowballs Lead to Broken Jaw

DETECTIVES are seeking witnesses to an assault that occurred at Derwent Parade, South Ockendon between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday, January 9, 2010 which left a 45-year-old local man with a broken jaw.

The incident started when a group of youths threw snowballs at the victim but escalated into something more serious. One of the youths involved was aged 17 – 18 years, 6′, with blond, scruffy hair and was wearing a padded jacket.

DC Karen Berry said, “The parade was busy at the time and I am certain that there were people who witnessed the events. What may have appeared to be a fairly innocent case of snowballing has left a man with serious injuries.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that can identify those responsible is asked to contact police at South Ockendon on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

  1. Was the broken jaw as a result of a projectile in the snowball or did it escalate into a fight, the story is not that clear? ovbviuosly my question is irrelevant to the outcome of what happened but it is not clear what the full story was!

  2. I would guess, and it is only a guess, I was not there, that the 45 year old man took offence at being hit by a snowball and started to seek revenge, in the ensuing fracas his jaw got broken.

I could be completely wrong, but I would doubt that a broken jaw could be the result of an innocent snowball fight. The fact that one of the boys had blond scruffy hair would indicate that he was the major cause of the broken jaw, a simple case of criminal profiling. Anybody who has watched CSI would know that. Find him and arrest him immediately…
