Nine games in sixteen days is an immense challenge. The Millermen are naturally taking it one game at a time but on this evidence they are taking it 45 minutes at a time as they wrapped up the game with a modicum of fuss with three first half goals.
Aveley are now five points off the play offs with three games in hand. Many say it cannot be done but the way they dismantled fifth placed Hastings indicates that it can. It is all a matter of pace, patience and keeping their heads.
The Sussex club were given an early shock when Junior Dadson pounced on a blocked Martin Tuohy shot to open the scoring in the third minute and Tuohy himself fired home less than 60 seconds later to make it 2-0.
Hastings almost got back into the game on 32 minutes when top scorer Ade Olorunda, back after missing Monday’s 5-0 win at Maidstone through injury, robbed Michael Alaile on the byline and played the ball into the goalmouth where Michael Phillips stabbed it against the foot of a post.
Aveley then scored again in the 40th minute, Tuohy grabbing his second of the night when Hastings keeper Steve Williams dropped a cross.
There were plenty of chances at both ends in the second half but none of them were taken.
