OCKENDON ACADEMY were celebrating today after learning from the government that they would be allowed to retain £1.5 million that they have earmarked for building improvements.
The Secretary of State has reviewed the total surplus balance of £2,037,083.94 and today notified the Academy that, following his determination of the balance, £533,465.08 should be retained by Thurrock Council and £1,503,618.86 should be paid to The Ockendon Academy.
A spokesperson for the school said: “We are delighted to advise that these funds will allow us to complete the long-awaited eight-classroom block which our students and our oversubscribed academy fully deserve.
“We would like to give special thanks to the MP for Thurrock, Mrs Jackie Doyle-Price, for her incredible support during this process.
“We wish also to acknowledge the commitment and patience of our Governing Body, staff, students and the local community which we serve.
