Rugby: Thurrock hammer Hammersmith

Thurrock took one step closer to the title with another maximum haul at lowly Hammersmith & Fulham whom fought through the whole game with tenacity which belies their current league standing. Thurrock got of to a great start through a well taken penalty from Frankie Neale, but then disaster struck, when captain Darryl Worster, dislocated his shoulder for the second time this season that now probably rules him out for the remainder of the season. Thurrock quickly re-shuffled with changes in the pack and continued to press and a fine run from Frankie Neale see him go over near the post’s and he then added the extra points himself landing a simple conversion. Things went from bad to worse for the home side as Thurrock still putting the pressure on the home side, was awarded a 5 metres scrum and with a pushover score looking inevitable the Hammers back row went offside, the referee had no hesitation on awarding a penalty try, Neale converted and Thurrock led 17-0

But things changed when Thurrock still in the ascendency had a pass intercepted in midfield and the home side turned into a try for Ratcliffe against the run of play. This gave them confidence and from a 5 metre line out the forwards through Gabbert scored again, McClure this time converted and then quickly added a penalty and in a blink of any eye the home side only trailed by 2 points. Neale with his second penalty just before the break to extend the lead to 20-15

The second period again started well for the visitors tries from Nathan Farrell and James Flavin the later after a good run from Dritan Loka and his perfectly timed pass gave Flavin the room to score under the pots, with Neale adding the conversion, to make it 32-15. Hammersmith refused to lie down and again against the run of play fashioned a try for Petit, converted by McClure to bring them back to 10 points. But quick tries from Sam Boshell his first touch after coming off the bench, and Earl Gorman wrapped up the game Neale added the earlier of the conversions. But the home side gained a point deep into injury time when Tanner produced a try from nothing and McClure added the extra’s with the last kick of the match.
