YT thought that we were the only ones roaming the borough with a camera but now we can reveal that the borough’s traffic wardens (civil enforcement officers) have now been equipped with state of the art secret cameras.
The covert film cameras are being trialled across the borough as a result of the increasing number of assaults on officers, according to the council.
But civil liberty campaigners have warned that the film cameras could be seen as a worrying expansion of the surveillance state.
A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said:
“Thurrock Council is trialling a chest-mounted security camera, on a free loan from Robocam UK Limited, to evaluate the benefits of the device on the safety and security of Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs).
“CEOs face confrontational situations — and occasional assaults. The number of formal complaints about alleged conduct of officers is also increasing and the camera footage can be used to resolve disputes.
“The council will ensure the information recorded during the trial is processed in line with requirements of the Data Protection Act.”
