Handball comes to Lakeside

LAKESIDE will be welcoming the British Handball Association to the centre for a day of physical and fast-paced fun, plus the chance for shoppers to speak to members of the British handball team.

The Central Atrium will be transformed into a handball zone with a fully equipped caged court so shoppers can witness the action live and even try the sport for themselves! Members of the British team will be on hand so people can ask questions about handball and see aspiring Olympians in action.

Handball is the fastest growing sport in the UK and the number one sport played by women in Europe, trumping both hockey and netball. It is the number two sport played by men in Europe, giving favourites such as rugby union and cricket a run for their money!

The fast and physical game is played indoors on a 40x20m court with six outfield players plus a goalkeeper on each team. The aim of the game is simply to score more goals than your opponent, and it makes for great entertainment with contact allowed and dozens of goals scored in each match.

Paul Goodwin from the British Handball Association commented, “We’re really looking forward to showing the public what handball is all about. It’s a great sport to play and watch, and it’s massive overseas. Our aim is to use the 2012 Olympics to make it more popular in Britain.”

Sophie Scott, Marketing Manager at Lakeside said, “We are so excited to have the British Handball Association in centre and to support the British Handball team. The visit is a great opportunity for Lakeside shoppers to see how the game is played and try it out for themselves, right alongside these aspiring Olympians. 2012 is such a great year for British sport and it is fantastic to get the local community enthusiastic about such a fast growing sport in the UK.”
