Swimming: Annual gala channels great talent

BLACKSHOTS, the home of Thurrock Swimming Club, saw nearly 150 swimmers take part in the club’s annual 3 T’s Gala on Sunday 15 July.

The annual event comprises of three teams split equally as to ability and age competing in either a one width or one length freestyle and backstroke race. Swimmers aged from 5 up to 12 competed in this year’s event aptly named the 3T’s Olympic Gala.

The event was a noisy event with each team donned in their appropriate colours led by Team Managers: Julie Morris & Vickie Bell (Red Team); Debra Astbury & Chelsea Coker (White Team) and Francesca Day & Wendy Wood (Blue Team).

Renae Dawes, Bethany Bryne, Maggie Wood, Darcey Morris, Martine Tran, Georgia Hobson, Annabel Speers and Andrew Martindale, swimmers from the National Age Group Squad, gave up their Sunday afternoon to support the clubs younger squad and swim school swimmers.

After just over two hours of fast and furious swimming the Blue Team emerged as winners on the day with the whole team receiving Gold medals; followed by the White Team taking Silver and Redd Team taking Bronze.

Gold medals were also presented to swimmers achieving the fastest swim times as follows:

Medals were presented by the Club President, Norman Edgell and Club Secretary, Hazel Day.

Newly appointed Gala Secretary, Corrine Williams said “with over 145 children I couldn’t believe how noisy it was at times! The Gala was so much fun and the swimmers really enjoyed it!
