ST LUKE’S Hospice is joining forces with more than 100 hospices across the UK to celebrate Hospice Care Week taking place 8 to 14th October.
Their ‘Hospice Care Week’ campaign is to highlight the inspiring and personal way that St. Luke’s Hospice helps people living with terminal illness improve the quality of their life, and how support extends to their family, their carers and our entire community.
They are putting forward the message ‘’That St Luke’s Hospice is for everyone’’ and is not limited, as is commonly thought, to people who have cancer or who are dying.
At St. Luke’s they treat people who have a whole range of life limiting and incurable illnesses, which include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone disease , Parkinson’s disease , HIV/Aids, chronic heart condition, end stage kidney failure, end stage heart disease.
They provide care and support through all stages of illness from diagnosis to survivorship, end of life care and bereavement.
As well as caring for people who have an incurable illness Hospice care changes lives, by reaching out and supporting our community in many ways they may not be aware of !
They offer a whole range of services to our patients’ family, carers, friends, and colleagues, to healthcare professionals, such as GP’s, social care staff and ambulance crews, to children, young people and the general public.
Many people also think that you have to be a ‘St. Luke’s patient’, have a terminal illness or have had a bereavement at St. Luke’s in order to use their services,-
That is not the case! Many of our services such as Adult, Children and Youth Counselling services, Information Resource Service and Education can be accessed by anyone in our community. Sometimes just a simple phone call is all that is required for help and support.
Care is not only provided at the main Hospice site (next to Basildon Hospital) – but also in patients’ own homes, at our 2 satellite centers in Billericay and Corringham, in hospitals, in schools, and residential homes.
At St. Luke’s they believe that Hospice care is not just about our buildings – it’s about people and our community and the support we give to each other.
During Hospice care week St Luke’s are asking people to pledge their support – be our friend on Facebook (www.facebook.com/stlukeshospicebasildonthurrock ) whether they have a connection to St. Luke’s or not or may already be one of our Facebook friends – they want them to send a message and say why St. Luke’s Hospice is important to them …. It may just be that they know we will be there for them if ever they need them.
Our Charity Shops are launching a campaign asking people to donate their old shoes to keep St. Luke’s Running
Our Fundraisers are holding a ‘fundraising ‘’Pooch n Boots’ 1 mile and 4 mile dog walk event to celebrate the end of Hospice care week on Sunday 14th October starting at 10am at Westleigh Heights, Langdon Hills, Basildon for more information visit www.stlukeshospice.com
