STAFF at St. Luke’s Hospice in Basildon are delighted they were given a 100% rating by the Care Quality Commission following an unannounced visit to the Hospice in November. The visit has now been backed up by a written report received last week declaring that the Hospice was ‘fully compliant with all standards that were assessed at the time of the inspection’.

The report detailed that care was of a high standard, patients were fully supported and protected from risk of infection. Patients were fully consulted about all aspects of their care, symptom control and treatments and were confident that no decisions would be made without their full involvement or their family members where appropriate.

Other reported findings stated ‘There were no concerns raised regarding care and welfare and the comments across the site were very positive such as: ‘’Excellent’, ‘good attentive staff,’’- ‘’The staff are so warm and caring they are like one big happy family’’

The overall impression is one of a very clean, friendly and caring environment. Everyone spoken to was positive about the quality of services at St Luke’s Hospice

The inspection report further highlighted the benefits and joy Day Hospice patients received from attending and that whilst being cared for in a caring environment it was noted that additional space for this group in particular would be an appreciated asset.

The establishment of the Hospice’s new Specialist Physiotherapy Service was also noted as there is currently no dedicated service provision for Physiotherapy within the South West Essex locality of the Cancer care network. The continuing development of patient focused care was reported as being evident throughout St. Luke’s management systems.

Deb Hickey (Head of Care at St. Luke’s) said: ’This is really good news for patients and everyone in our community. It’s a welcome endorsement of the hard work carried out by all our staff in working to achieve our vision for outstanding local Hospice care.

“The Care Quality Commission standards cover important issues such as treating people with respect, involving them in decisions about care, keeping clinical areas clean and ensuring services are safe which echo St. Luke’s ethos that everyone should be treated with dignity, care and respect’’.
