COMMENTS by Thurrock councillor Mark Coxshall which suggested a travellers’ site would look like “My Big Fat Gypsy Cesspit” are being investigated by Essex Police.
The Corringham and Fobbing councillor made the comments about a site in Stanford-le-Hope.
The Irish Traveller Movement in Britain said the comments were racist and complained to Thurrock Council.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “We are looking into an allegation of hate crime following comments made by a councillor relating to a travellers’ site in Stanford-le-Hope.
“We are ascertaining whether any criminal offence has been committed.”

No I’m not proud of this moment, and in no way overjoyed simply because, in this day and age public representatives should be aware that the comments that were made are unacceptable and unacceptable for anybody to make and should never have been made in the first place, you seem to forget this member made these comments of his own accord, and is accountable for them instead of blaming everybody else perhaps you should ask the member concerned why made these comments and place himself in this position.
What I am pleased with is that there are provisions in place to deal with these sorts of racially motivated comments for everybody to adhere to instead of making up racial hatred

Cllr Mark Coxshall was living with and was (is?) the partner of Jackie Doyle-Price MP.
Cllr Mark Coxshall was also the Chairman of South Basildon & East Thurrock Conservative Association and is currently their Treasurer so he is a senior figure within the local Conservative Party.
Cllr Mark Coxshall is also employed by the local MPs.
This press release would have been authorised by Cllr Phil Anderson, Leader of the Conservative Group at Thurrock Council.
Cllr Coxshall may spew forth bile but he and Thurrock Conservatives have been very generous to the traveller/gypsy community in Thurrock.

So how did Thurrock Conservatives vote – did a single one of them while drafting the Local Development Framework, while it worked its way through the various working groups call for no more traveller/gypsy pitches in Thurrock?

I agree that illegal developments in the Green Belt should not be permitted and people should go through the proper planning channels. So I can’t fault Cllr Coxshall on this issue – but I would question the language he has used – it would appear he learned nothing from his compulsory equalities and diversity training.
However – Thurrock has 18 unauthorised Traveller/Gypsy pitches already – why isn’t Cllr Coxshall demanding Thurrock Council take action against these illegal and unauthorised developments as well? Or could it be that Cllr Coxshall voted that these illegal developments should be tolerated and regularised – he did – it is in the Local Development Framework that he voted for.
So yet again Cllr Coxshalls vocal public vitriol against travellers should be compared to how he and his fellow Conservative Councillors have all voted to tolerate and regularise 18 unauthorised traveller and gypsy pitches in Thurrock.
But we should all be used to the hypocrisy of politicians by now.
Thurrock Conservatives having vocally campaigned against any development in the Green Belt and having made it the main plank of their recent local election campaigns over the past decade yet they have voted for 15% of new houses (2775 homes) to be built on Thurrocks Green Belt.
They also voted for an additional 4750 dwellings above the 18500 already agreed to be located in the borough – so although the Local Development Framework plan identifies where 18500 homes go – it also prepares the way for an additional 4750 homes to be built – so at least 23250 homes will be built over the next 14 years.
As for defending the Green Belt the Conservatives voted for it to be Thurrock Council policy to “continue to identify further sites within the Green Belt to allocate for residential development” and for “building to continue on the Green Belt where appropriate.”
I haven’t plucked the above information from thin air or made it up – it’s in the document that the Borough’s Councillors voted for in December 2011.
hot press – I can’t recall a single time when either Cllr Terry Hipsey or Cllr Garry Hague, both former Conservative leaders of Thurrock Council would have authorised such bile from their Councillors.
Thurrock Councillors over the past few years have lurched to ‘Dog Whistle’ politics banging on amount immigrants, benefit claimants and gypsies/travellers and have descended to punch and Judy politics without saying what the Conservative policy would be or how they would sort things out.
For instance they demanded the resignation of Cllr Victoria Holloway over the bin fiasco (instead of the Council Manager) instead of saying what they would do instead to improve the service.

THURROCK MP Jackie Doyle-Price has made her opinion clear on the suspension of Chafford Hundred councillor, Neil Rockcliffe following his controversial “Chaffrica” comments.
Speaking to YourThurrock, Jackie Doyle-Price said: “When you hold public office, you have to be aware of how written material could be interpreted.
“These comments made by councillor Rockcliffe are unhelpful and could bring the Conservative Party into disrepute.
“A lot of hard work has gone into community cohesion. During the General Election campaign, the then Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion, Baroness Warsi (now Chair of the Conservative Party) joined us on the campaign trail and she praised the work that we were doing.
“We would not want to see anything that would undermine that.
“What should ultimately happen, though, is a matter for the Thurrock Conservative Group to decide.”
Councillor Rockcliffe has been suspended by the Conservative Group.
I believe what happened to Neil Rockcliffe was brought on by himself and was dealt with in an appropriate manner, this latest incident by Mark Coxshall I believe goes a lot further, and needs to be dealt with swiftly, and the other members should also be dealt with for signing this racially motivated press release accordingly,

The only thing Cllr Coxshall nd the Conservative Group at Thurrock Council have achieved is turn those travellers illegally developing the Green Belt into victims.
The Conservative Councillors would also now have a prejudicial view on any planning applications from Gypsies or Travellers so would be unable to sit on any future planning committee where such decisions would be decided.
Cllr Phil Anderson said : “This application hasn’t been taken desperately seriously or in good faith. This was more an attempt to string out the process and is an abuse of those processes.”
By stating this he has opened up the application to be appealed and heard again as at least one Committee meeting didn’t take it seriously.

I do not see this as that serious. Travellers are not a race. They are a group of people like ‘chavs’ ‘grungers’ ‘hippies’ etc. So the comments said are in no way racist whatsoever. The tendancy to make everything racist (I call it Faux-racism) helps to detract from real unjust racist treatment.
You cannot judge the ‘cesspit’ comment with the same brush as the ‘Chaffrica’ comment. Cllr Rockcliffe was white making a remark about his area turning into Africa with the influx of Nigerians moving onto Chafford at the time. Although to most it was a throw away remark, I can understand how that comment was controversial. Those people did not break the law to move to Chafford, they did not pitch up on a field and then lodge planning permission much to the annoyance of their neighbours.

The mentality in Thurrock astounds me sometimes. Only a couple months ago Eric Pickles and the villagers of Mountnessing near Brentwood forced Travellers to leave the cricket pitch yet in Thurrock rather than focusing on occupying land illegally and thus breaking the law, one councillors throwaway remarks are such a big deal. No wonder why the two boroughs, although neighbours, are so so very different.
I have a sneaky suspicion that this has more to do with a dislike of the actual councillor rather than his remarks which is why some are blowing this out of proportion.
As an aside I do wonder how much time Essex Police are going to focus on this issue. It’s not like Thurrock is crime free at the moment.

If you think you’re saving the world and the whale over this issue then that is your belief. I have a feeling that if the vast majority of the public knew that taxpayers money and police time was being wasted on this, it wouldn’t endear them to the cause of travellers, regardless of how false that is. I’ve read with interest this story & all comments made,yet I still can not understand a couple of things
A) it reads as though this family own the land ?

B) Why in the world have neither of our MP’S made a statement on this?
Could it be as one of the councillors, (I say one as let’s not forget athere are others involved here. ) not only works / advices the MP’S but also I’m lead to believe is also in a relationship with one of them.
There are many people that for good reasons do not like the human rights act yet right or wrong it is place for a reason. As is the code of conduct at all council buildings in the country.if you put yourself forward for a high profile position Cllr / advisor to MP then I would imagine you would quickly learn to watch every word that you spoke. These people aren’t even travellers. That’s been established. They’re an ordinary family from London born and bred in this country. Issue over. They know the law of the land but let’s not let that get in the way of things. Somebody said some derisory words about travellers and this has been linked to this family so therefore we must have the ambulance chasers charging to the rescue. In January next year they will no doubt be charging to the rescue of the tens, if not hundreds of thousands of Romanians and Bulgarians that will be coming here as valued members of the community enriching the country with more diversity.

A few weeks ago it was in the headlines about a bunch of Romanians that had plotted up somewhere in West London, among other areas, that they weren’t entitled to stay. They were moved on. Squatters in houses are moved on on a regular basis. Homeless people are told to move on if they are in a place they are not supposed to be. The Ambulance chasers of the race relations industry would probably tag the Romanians as an ethnic minority and say it was unjust. If they were white British, nothing would be said. The same can be said if I and a bunch of like minded friends rolled up in a bunch of caravans and said, this looks like a nice place to live, I would lay serious money on us being moved on and not a peep from the race relations ambulance chasers.
If people decide to adopt an illegal and risky lifestyle, that’s their choice. They do, on the other hand, have the choice to do what other people do and abide by the law.
It appears that as a nation we should once again shell out land, benefits, education, housing and health care to anyone that decides they like the look of this country as a place to live despite having contributed nothing. When we’re totally bankrupt I suppose they’ll all move on.

At the end of the day this is a planning issue. You can’t just go building without planning consent. I don’t care if they own the land or not or if they are providing for their family or not. If you want to build a house apply for planning permission before you start building.
All the Conservative Group at Thurrock Council have done has turned this issue away from a simple planning issue into abuse against travellers and the Ward family. They have now turned those who are breaking planning rules into the victims of abuse and vilification by the Conservative Party.
We shouldn’t just single out Mark Coxshall for his pig ignorant comments, we should lay the blame at Cllr Phil Anderson, Leader of the Conservative Group who authorised this press release as an official Thurrock Conservative Party press release.
I can’t recall a single incident where former Conservative Leaders, Anne Cheale, Terry Hipsey or Garry Hague have ever authorised such bile and hate.
Could I just add that as a former Labour voter and party member up until 2000 I have never voted Tory and have no intention of doing so in the future. I think most can guess where my vote will be going. That’s right, the Liberal Democrats.
